PreSchool Family
Parent Education Since 1946
History
The original intent of PreSchool Family, to provide a place for parents to observe and learn about their children, is still the integral focus now. It is a parent education program where parenting is validated and its joys and tribulations can be shared.
1946
Besse Bolton, a kindergarten teacher, believes parents and children benefit when parents are aware of early childhood development. She gathers an interested group of parents to approach Palo Alto Adult School. PreSchool Family is founded.
1962
Betty Rogaway, a teacher in the program, becomes the second program coordinator.
1976
PreSchool Family moves to Greendell (a closed PAUSD elementary school.) Previously, PreSchool Family moved almost annually, using sites in churches, cottages, basements and schools.
1978
Parent participation programs for infants and toddlers begin.
1982
Eleanora Jadwin becomes the third program coordinator.
1987
Dr. Lynda Smith, parent education consultant to the State Department of Education, identifies PreSchool Family as a model program.
1995
Sharon Keplinger, a teacher in the program, becomes the fourth program coordinator.
1996
PreSchool Family is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
1996
PreSchool Family celebrates its 50th anniversary.
2005
Friends of PreSchool Family is founded.
